Every number on this site, and where it came from
Four of the figures on this website are other people's research, and every one of them links to the original. Three are our own field work, and we say exactly what we measured and on what. The rest belong to the specimen page, and the script that produced them is published.
The rule we hold ourselves to
A figure with no source is a decoration. Marketing pages in our industry are full of them — striking percentages with no study behind them, or with a study that says something narrower than the sentence quoting it. So we set one rule for this website: if we cannot link to the original publication, the number does not go on the page. Two figures we would have liked to use were removed under that rule rather than softened.
Everything below was checked by hand on 3 August 2026. If a link has since gone dead, tell us at help@anakslabs.com and we will fix or remove the figure.
Other people's research
Four figures, from two surveys, both of US adults, both published in 2026. Neither was commissioned by us and we have no relationship with either publisher.

Our own measurements
These three have no outside link to give you, because we produced them. So we tell you the sample definition instead — what we drew from, how many, and what counted as a finding. We hold the individual practices we looked at in confidence and do not name any of them.
The sample: 182 US clinic websites, in two separate groups.
The base for the figures below, and referred to on the clinics page and the specimen page. The two groups were drawn in completely different ways, so we keep them apart and never add them into one percentage.
- Group one — the registry draw
- 122 sites. Drawn at random from the federal provider registry (NPPES, the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System — the public directory every US healthcare provider is listed in), then narrowed to the practices that had a website of their own and were not part of a chain. This is the only group we can call a random sample of anything.
- Group two — the comparison set
- 60 sites. A comparison set of US clinic sites that had already been singled out as well made — drawn from published “best of” round-ups by design blogs and marketing agencies, not from the registry. Nine such lists, none of them an agency showing off its own client work and none of them an awards gallery. They are not award winners, not randomly sampled and not representative of anything. We use them for one purpose: to see which problems survive being built well.
- What we did to each
- Opened the site and read what the page hands to a search engine before anything on it runs, then compared that with what a patient sees.
- Who ran it
- Anaks Labs. Not commissioned, not peer-reviewed, not published as a paper. It is our own field work and we describe it as ours.
- Limits
- 182 sites is enough to see a pattern and not enough to publish a national estimate. Treat these as what we found, not as what is true of every clinic in the United States. Where a figure comes from only one of the two groups, we say which.
At the very lowest, two in three never answer a patient question on the page.

- Base
- All 182 sites, split into the three groups we could tell apart: the comparison set (60), the registry sites we reached automatically (71), and the registry sites we had to search for by hand (51).
- What we measured
- Comparison set 71.7%. Registry sites reached automatically 81.7%. Registry sites found by search 66.7%. Across the registry group as a whole, 75.4%.
- What counted
- A page fails this if nowhere on it does it answer a question a patient would type — what it costs, whether an insurer is taken, how long recovery takes, whether you can be seen today, where to park. A phone number is not an answer.
- Scope
- Of everything we measured, this is the figure that moves most with how we found the site — 15 points between the two halves of the registry group alone. A single headline number would therefore be the number our method produced, not the number that is true. So we publish the floor: every group we measured came in at 66.7% or worse. That statement survives the variation; “72%” does not, and we have taken it off the site.
- Note
- The sites that had already been picked out as good examples came in at 71.7%, inside the same band as the rest. Good design does not protect against it.

- Base
- The 200 practices drawn from the registry, not the sites we went on to measure. Every practice we drew counts here, including the ones with nothing to measure.
- What we measured
- 69 of 200, or 34.5%. Of the rest, 85 had a website we verified, and 46 we could not settle either way — blocked, unreachable, or a candidate we could not confirm was theirs. So the share of these practices with a site of their own is somewhere between 42.5% and 65.5%, and we do not report a single number for it.
- What counted
- No site of the practice’s own that we could find. We searched each practice by name, city and phone number. A directory listing, a social page or a page on a hospital group’s site is not a website the practice controls, and we counted those as none. This is a “could not find” result rather than a proof of absence — though a patient searching the same way would not find one either.
- Checked a second way
- We went back over all 71 we had failed to find, using a different method entirely — a public map index, matched on phone number rather than on name. It recovered two. Three more looked recovered and were not: the phone number matched but the site would not open for us, and we opened each one by hand before rejecting it. Had we accepted those on the match alone, this figure would read 33.0%.
4% set the headline as a picture. 57% never say what the business is.

- Base
- The 122 registry sites only. Not the comparison set, and not the two pooled.
- What we measured
- Headline set as a picture: 4.1%. No statement of business type or location in a form a machine can carry away: 57.4%.
- What counted
- For the first: the main heading of the page exists only inside an image, so the sentence a visitor reads is not a sentence anything else can quote. For the second: the page carries no machine-readable statement of what kind of business it is or where it is — the address may well be printed on the page for a person to read, but nothing declares it.
- Scope
- The headline figure is the one we show, and it is small. We show it because it is the clearest illustration of the mechanism, not because it is common, and we say so on the page rather than letting the diagram imply frequency. In the comparison set it was 1.7%.
The specimen counts
The five counts on the specimen page are not a survey of anything. They are measurements of two pages we wrote ourselves, published so that you can reproduce them.

- Measured on
- /clinics/example/before/ and /clinics/example/after/ — two pages we wrote for a fictional practice. Neither is anyone's real website.
- Method
- Each URL fetched and parsed as text with Python's standard-library HTML parser. No browser, no JavaScript, nothing rendered. The exact definition of every row is printed underneath the table on that page.
- Script
- /tools/measure-specimen.py — the script that produced them. It needs nothing installed.
One figure we deliberately do not use
There is a number going round our industry at the moment: “59% of US adults use AI for health.” You will see it on agency pages and in pitch decks. It is a misreading of the survey we cite at the top of this page, and it is roughly twice the real figure.
In the West Health–Gallup study, 59% is a share of the people who already use AI for health — specifically, those who use it to prepare questions before a doctor's visit. The share of all US adults who have used AI for health information or advice is 25%. The two are not the same base, and swapping one for the other roughly doubles the claim.
We are pointing this out for a reason that is not generous. 25% is our number and it is the smaller one. We could have used 59% like everyone else, and the page would have hit harder. A figure you can check is worth more to you than a figure that flatters us, and the only way to prove we mean that is to show you where we chose the lower one.
The same rule removed two other figures we wanted. Conversion rates attributed to AI traffic, and the frequency with which AI summaries appear above search results, are both widely quoted and neither traces back to a primary study we could link. So neither appears anywhere on this site.
